ABOUT DEPARTMENT

Established in 1977, the Department of English at GOVT.DEGREE COLLEGE, AVANIGADDA is one of the oldest in the College. Given its history, the Department has been closely involved in the growth of the College and has contributed consistently to academic and cultural life. Home to pioneering intellectuals and grooming young minds towards excellence in the past, the Department strives to consolidate and maintain this legacy, and holds itself to high standards in academic performance and social responsibility.

VISION:


The cornerstone of the English Department’s vision is to establish the department as a hub of academic excellence by encouraging and fostering language proficiency, , literary sensibility, life skills and critical thinking among learners to meet their professional demands in today's globalized environment.

MISSION:


1. Knowledge dissemination through a need based curriculum of English language, literature, communication and soft skills
2.Language skills approach through technology integrated and interactive/activity-based methods
3.Make the learners aware of social ideals
4.Training on linguistic proficiency in preparation for competitive and other exams

AIM:


To enable the students to
1.Enhance skills in first language
2.Learn and distinguish native and non-native varieties of English
3.Express creatively in a given context
4.Read critically and interpret the text
5.Enhance and improve their drafting and editing skills
6.Enrich knowledge and confidence in pursuing professional
7.Participate in Workshops, Seminars, Mock Interviews etc

OBJECTIVES:


• To reflect the fact that literature is nothing but the reflection of life and a way of knowing, rather than a gathering of information or theories.
• To foster the creation of literature as well as study of it
• Introduce students to creative, academic and professional writing.

METHODOLOGY:


The department of English • Uses Bilingual method to break the barriers between regional medium and English medium students. This method is used to instill confidence among the students of rural area to overcome inhibitions and try to converse in English.
• Distributes reading material in printed form.
• Uses Smartboard to screen video clippings to teach communication skills and soft skills.
• Conducts frequent writing assignments, opportunity to present orally and lively discussions of literary texts, contemporary issues in the course material.
• Organizes group discussions and student seminars.
• Encourages students to participate in public readings and performances.
• Organizes guest lectures.
